Villagers in the district of Chilaw were perplexed when small fish started to rain down from above.
Locals were alerted to the phenomenon by the sound of something dropping on to the ground outside and discovered that the area had become littered with hundreds of fish. Delighted at the prospect of a free meal, many ventured out and started to collect the fish in buckets.
The strange event follows another similar incident that also took place in Sri Lanka back in 2012 involving a deluge of prawns that mysteriously descended from the heavens. A downpour of peculiar red and yellow "meteor rain" also struck the region later that year.
Scientists believe that cases of small animals raining from the sky usually happen when a whirlwind forms over shallow water, sucks the creatures up in to the sky and then deposits them back down again at distances of up to several hundred miles away.
