Race is on for space-junk alarm system

The US government is running a competition aimed at finding the best way to deal with the threat posed by junk and debris to spacecraft in orbit around the Earth. A 'space fence' has been proposed as a way to keep tabs on the problem.
A worldwide network of radar stations could tackle the ever-growing problem of space debris - the remains of old rockets and satellites that pose an increasing threat to spacecraft.

Hmm.....another big fence to keep the aliens out. Makes sense that the U.S. is promoting it.

That picture is amazing. Look at all that stuff! Remember when Skylab crashed back on Earth back in 1973? Can any or all of this junk come down? Hopefully it would burn up before it got here but wow. I can sure see why we need a way to clean it up. Doesn't look like there's a lot of room left.

I can sure see why we need a way to clean it up. Doesn't look like there's a lot of room left. I need to edit. My mistake. Skylab was launched in 1973. It fell in 1979. Looks like we've created our own asteroid belt. LOL
