How did the Easter Island statues get their red hats ? Archaeologists now believe that the mysterious headpieces sported by the statues were rolled down from a volcano and are composed of compressed red scoria dust.
Archaeologists believe they have solved one ancient mystery surrounding the famous Easter Island statues. At 2,500 miles off the coast of Chile, the island is one of the world's most remote places inhabited by people.

"However, precisely how and why the hats were attached is unknown" - so what's so great about this find then? It actually makes me slightly angry I thought they discovered some grand scheme...they got nothing.

As a hat enthusiast, I'm always glad to see any news about hats, but this sounds like the typically vague kind of "explanation" experts always come up with when they don't really know but they've been given a multi-million dollar budget to investigate something, so they figure that they'd better come up with something. If in doubt, say that something might perhaps have a religious purpose. "An adze was found in pristine condition next to the hats. The scientists think it might be an ancient offering." Or perhaps someone might just have left it there.
