The unmanned LCROSS rocket modules have successfully hit their target on the lunar surface, it is hoped that the information gathered through the impacts will reveal the presence of large amounts of water on the moon.
Pictures of the two spectacular lunar impacts aimed at detecting water beneath the Moon's surface have been beamed back to Earth. Two unmanned LCROSS rocket modules taking part in today's Nasa mission successfully hit their target at the Cabeus A crater near the moon's south pole.

Quoting a friend: This is interesting. Quote But initial photos show that the moon didn't give the reaction to the double jabs that NASA expected. It say's photos of the double impact, How did they get photos of the second impact? Did it take pictures of itself?

I think the point is - who gave the US the right to bomb the moon? Is that all anyone thinks of anymore? Just bomb the damn thing and to hell with the consequences? What do you care then if your country is at war and bombing places on earth? It's no different. Just because the moon does not show signs of life, does that mean the first thing we should do with it is bomb it? Natural impacts are a different matter. Man knows no bounds. A bullet here, a machine gun there, an atom bomb here a nuclear bomb there, and what the hey? All in the name of what? If we did send astronauts to the moon before... [More]

I'm all about knowledge and scientific advancement. My issue with this whole solution is the fact that America, as well numerous other countries, are in deep financial turmoil and here we are once again spending money on seemingly unimportant matters. Now I know that fiscal budgets and what not are porportioned in cycles, but lets get real here, financial aid for potential college students has been cut, our education system and basically entire economic system is on a downslide and yet the higher ups have the gall to blow millions on finding water on the moon. Wow. I guess next time I go to th... [More]

I'm certainly not against scientific pursuits either, but Qoais wins.

Congrats to NASA on a successful mission.

...There seems to be many negative comments on various news articles, bogs, message forums, etc, in response to this event. Actually, many of us are old enough to remember The Space Race. In the technical infancy of space exploration, the superpowers hit the Moon with lunar impactors. Then, they developed the technology to soft-land on the Moon, eventually even landing television and sensor-equipped rovers on the Moon. The data gathered led to manned landings (even if not all the photo/video is genuine). Now, forty years later we are supposed to stand up and applaud that NASA has reinvented th... [More]
