New rocket could reach Mars in 40 days

A new rocket propulsion system in development could make travelling to Mars within a couple of months a reality.
The new system is being developed by a company founded by former NASA astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz and uses both electric power and magnetic fields to channel superheated plasma out the back of the rocket.
Future Mars outposts or colonies may seem more distant than ever with NASA's exploration plans in flux, but the rocket technology that could someday propel a human mission to the red planet in as little as 40 days may already exist.

This just shows how when it comes to human progress and space exploration it all depends now on human psychology. It all depends now if we want to go to space because if we really did we would solve problems, but the bigger thing is that people are much more preocupated with wars and plundering. Just look at that film "Avatar" they had to invent financial reasons to go to other planet because in capitalism space exploration is useless and boring because there's no profit in it.

It requires a 200 megawatt power source if you want to get to mars in 40 days. You could power 22 homes for a whole year with an average of 1kW/hr power usage. Plus they theorized it would take 1KW/KG to get the proper thrust and the only nuclear reactor ever launched into space only achieved 1kW/50KG according to the article.

This looks like a job for Tony Stark and his Arc Reactor.

This looks like a job for Tony Stark and his Arc Reactor. OK then, in that same vein, or Mjolnir, the mystic hammer of Thor.

OK then, in that same vein, or Mjolnir, the mystic hammer of Thor. Mjolnir is total overkill, but would definitely be cool!

Well, nuclear power itself is not the issue, however, the U.N. International Space Treaty currently forbids the use of nuclear power for spacecraft propulsion. Here's the qoute: Source http://www.oosa.unvienna.org/pdf/publications/STSPACE11E.pdf "Affirming that this set of Principles applies to nuclear power sources in outer space devoted to the generation of electric power on board space objects for nonpropulsive purposes, which have characteristics generally comparable to those of systems used and missions performed at the time of the adoption of the Principles..."
