A man who kept his mother's remains in a backpack is just one of a number of similar cases in Japan.
A recent investigation aimed at checking up on citizens over 100 years old has been launched following the discovery of an alleged 111 year-old man who was found mummified in his bed after having been dead almost 30 years.
The remains of a Japanese woman have been found in a backpack, in the latest gruesome discovery by investigators searching for missing old people. The woman's son told police his mother died in 2001 but he had not been able to pay for a burial.

why not dig a hole in ur backyard and put the corpse there? That's what I was thinking. Not having enough money for a funeral is no reason to tote Momma's corpse around like a load of school books.

He could have buried it in a yard, burned it, thrown it in a lake somewhere, tossed it into some woods and let nature take care of it. . .Stuffed it in the backpack and then throw it up in a tree. . .the list goes on. . .but to stuff it in a backpack and keep it?? He did keep it, right? The article didn't really say. . .and that really makes a big difference! That's really sad though. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't pay for my mom's funeral. What's the procedure on ... [More]

According to the article the man was still collecting her pension checks. I know Japanese real estate is expensive but after collecting a few years of pension money he could have afforded to pay for a plot!! lol JK I know they would realize she had passed away a while ago...
