The world's first sustainable fusion reactor could become workable within just two years.
In construction at the National Ignition Facility in Livermore California the $4 billion project is hoping to produce the first ever sustainable fusion reactor to provide almost unlimited clean energy for the future.
Following a series of key experiments over the last few weeks, the £2. 2 billion project has inched a little closer to its goal of igniting a workable fusion reaction by 2012.

So what happened to France Will Get Fusion Reactor... 2005Perhaps the French are not interested in fusion power or they had to unload this "white elephant". ITER has been on the books longer than NIF (I think, anyway). Regardless, NIF for attempting ICF (inertial confinement fusion) while ITER is for MCF (magnetic confinement fusion). Since the future of affordable energy might rest with fusion... it's nice to try all the angles. Plus then we have the option of destroying the Earth in some sort of perpetual magnetic vortex storm OR an accidental mini-supernova. Stars with this, black holes wit... [More]

Any one doomsday physics machine will destroy the world, but two doomsday physics machines will cancel each other out! Its the ``Godzilla vs. Mothra'' principle. Any... [More]

That's also not true at all. As previous posts have explained, fusion is inherently safe. Fusion is completely different than fission, which is also extremely safe when not performed by idiots. Same can be said about guns. It doesn't kill people, idiots holding the said guns do. So, there's bound to be a few idiots among a large team of scientists working on this fusion reactor. LOL!

Great, some moron scientist wannabes pretending to make advancements in hot fusion when cold fusion has been around for years. Cold fusion has never worked. It has only offered a few hints that fusion is even happening. No energy has been measured. Only a few attempts showed higher than normal numbers of neutrons. Those attempts couldn't be repeated. Cold fusion is cold and dead. Maybe it could work but not by using any of the techniques yet attempted.

Some thing I read a while back suggested this system may be used to reduce the stocks of spent fuel rods by using them in pellet form. That I would like to see. You must be thinking of something else. The fuel for this reactor is deuterium and tritium, two hydrogen isotopes. Nuclear fission uses very large atoms, which break apart into smaller atoms. Nuclear fusion uses very small atoms, slamming them together to make slightly larger atoms. Spent fuel rods consist of very large atoms. They're not of any use for the reactor being discussed. Edit: I probably should have read sepulchrave's respon... [More]

if this thing blows out, 1 continent will dissapear cheers. humanity will INDEED change after 2012. Positive or negative..that's the question

The first is sustainable fusion reactor would be feasible in just two years. The scientists at the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, California, is creating the world's development first fusion reactor, which is an important energy supplier for merger coming years.

I sadly foresee this revolutionary project going the way of the H2O-fueled engine and practical alternative energy at present- sabotaged, diverted, silenced, and largely quashed by the influential puppeteers who have always done this. Consolidate the wealth, exploit the resources, and keep all of us sick and begging. If there is any hope at all, it lies with the Proles.

It would be just as easy to shovel ashes into a fireplace and then try to light the ashes. Water is the "ash" that is left over after hydrogen and oxygen burn together. As f... [More]
