Dead or alive ? Its all in the eyes

New research has shown how important the eyes are in determining if we are looking at a living person.
A sequence of images was created using an amalgamation of human faces and doll faces, volunteers who were then asked to pick which of the faces had a mind behind them tended to look at the eyes in order to make that determination.
With its technologically advanced animated characters, the 2004 film The Polar Express was supposed to change moviemaking. Instead, it gave audiences the creeps. Reviewers dissed it as "the night of the living dead. " Why didn't the audience perceive the characters as alive? Something, they said, was wrong with the eyes.

Artists have known this for centuries. The key to any good portrait is getting the eyes right. Its funny that they're just now studying this. I thought the same, I totally agree. and I am surprised to know that the scientists were until now unaware of it.

I wonder if this study would be beneficial for victims where they are unable to communicate for themselves, such as being in a coma or considered clinically dead due to lack of brain waves? A while back there was an article about some guy who was thought to be in a coma for like ten years but was actually paralyzed and awake the entire time. Didn't the specialist who caught on to him not being in a coma say the eyes were what gave it away?

Artists have known this for centuries. The key to any good portrait is getting the eyes right. Its funny that they're just now studying this. As a child, I was very enthusiastic about drawing and I remember always starting with the eyes, for people, animals and monsters/creatures. For me, the eyes would determine what the rest of the character looked like, or was doing. I don't think I ever achieved a significant level of accomplishment as a well rounded artist, but I became so good at drawing eyes that people loved my drawings. The eyes distracted them from the weak points of my drawing abili... [More]

It's true. I've seen someone close to me die, and I know they died when the light left their eyes..

Yes, it was known but not peer reviewed and published. The way of art versus the way of science. The trick is to get enough objective data and just not anecdotal or subjective information.

I am a certified Iridologist and I can state categoricaly that we can detect illnesses for many years by examining the eye Why don't the governments spent some money on alternative medicines and cures instead of stating the obvious

A while back there was an article about some guy who was thought to be in a coma for like ten years but was actually paralyzed and awake the entire time. Didn't the specialist who caught on to him not being in a coma say the eyes were what gave it away? That's quite possible. I don't think I read about this before. I'll do a little search to see if I can locate the story.

That's quite possible. I don't think I read about this before. I'll do a little search to see if I can locate the story. Found it, it was 23 years. http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=169478 And I had it backwards. The Glascow coma scale they used for 23 years drew its result from eye, verbal and motor response. They found that he wasn't in a coma with brain scans.
