Whale sharks could prove to be even bigger than first thought at over 20 metres in length.
Armed with a newly developed underwater camera that has laser pointers scientists are diving off the coast of Mozambique to attempt a more accurate measurement of the whale shark. While previous measurements have indicated that the whale shark is the biggest fish in the ocean scientists have always known that the measurements were only a best guess.
Researchers claim they have dramatically improved the precision of this method with the addition of two laser pointers. By positioning the lasers 50cm apart on either side of the camera, the distance between the projected points provides a fixed scale so that photographs can be analysed with greater accuracy.
no one knows what lurks in the oceans, most hasn't been discovered.who knows what the biggest fish is They should have said biggest known fish, although from the environmental conditions of most of the unexplored areas of ocean (mostly the deep bits) I doubt that a larger fish does exist.
if we have only discovered 10% of the world oceans. only when the other 90% is discovred we will be able establish the largest ocean living animals Actually that's not true. We've explored much more than just 10%, especially when you count in sonar and geomapping.
