Researchers are adding live cells to bandages to spur blood vessel growth so wounds heal quicker.
Though the concept of adding growth factors to bandages in an effort to aid healing isn't new, this research is the first to add live cells to spur growth of blood vessels. The porous "stamp" is 1 cm. across, made of layers of a hydrogel comprised of polyethylene glycol and methacrylic alginate. Researchers see many uses for this method of prompting new blood vessel growth.
Researchers have developed a bandage that stimulates and directs blood vessel growth on the surface of a wound. The bandage, called a “microvascular stamp,” contains living cells that deliver growth factors to damaged tissues in a defined pattern.

In 1984 a company called Applied Medical Devices came out with a product called THROMB-AID - It was a bandage that prevented bleeding as soon as it was applied to wounds. The THROMB-AID product line was bought out (acquired) then shut down in 1987 after successful trials. As a former soldier I thought that this was a crime and still do. Don't hold your breath that this product will ever make it to the free market.
