A man who had managed to get an eel stuck up his rectum sought assistance at an Aukland hospital.
No explanation has been provided as to how the unnamed individual got himself in to such a bizarre predicament but a hospital spokesman has confirmed that the case was genuine. Fortunately doctors were able to remove the creature and the man was later discharged and sent home.
"The eel was about the size of a decent sprig of asparagus and the incident is the talk of the place," said a spokesman. "Doctors and nurses have come across people with strange objects that have got stuck where they shouldn't be before, but an eel has to be a first."
According to the Department of Conservation website, there are two main types of eel found in New Zealand - the shortfin and the longfin.
