A thermal drill is being developed to melt and drill down through the icy shell of Jupiter's moon Europa.
NASA and ESA are planning to send a probe to explore the enigmatic Jovian moon as early as 2020, the new drill will help them to get down through the thick ice shell to the ocean below where life might be found.
NASA and the European Space Agency are sending a mission to study Jupiter and its moon Europa in 2020. There may be life in the moon’s ocean, but to find out a mission will have to be able to drill down through the overlying ice shell.

I would love to volunteer to be the 1'st man or kid to go fishing on Europa! Wouldn't that be something. we had Neel Armstrong , 1st man to walk the moon, now you can have me, 1st man to fish on a moon

after I had a conversation with a friend who work in oil drilling related work , I come to conclusion that the biggest problem for mission to Europa will the drilling part . my friend confirm with me that with our current technology , it's impossible to drill miles deep without getting stuck even once.

This is not going to be your typical oil rig type drill and even then we can drill deep enough no problem.

Was this not a problem with Antarctica ? Lubricants could destroy protozoan life.

Was this not a problem with Antarctica ? Lubricants could destroy protozoan life. This is a thermal drill so it will be melting it's way through and I don't think NASA will be using anything toxic as a lubricant. Contamination will be a huge concern and measures will be takin.

He's right. It will be very interesting when this happens. I'm extremely confident that we will find some sort of life there. The odds of finding life there is higher than not finding life there. Unless you're a creationist and then when we find life there you'll say we planted it in a conspiracy against god.

/Whistles quietly./ Since no one else is likely to think of this, I'll say it. . . "Yours is the drill that will pierce the Heavens!!!!!" [/Guren Lagann reference] Hope they find something there, but if not, at least they'll have developed a heat drill to melt miles of ice.
