The Space X Falcon 9 sparked a plethora of UFO sighting reports over Australia this weekend.
The rocket was launched from Cape Canaveral and its motion produced a spiral effect that was sighted over Australia, residents of New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory reported seeing a strange object in the skies as the rocket soared overhead.
A bright spiralling light, believed by astronomers to be a rocket launched from Cape Canaveral, was spotted in skies across Australia's east coast just before dawn Saturday, sparking a UFO frenzy.

I'm afraid we don't take articles off the site simply because someone disagrees with the interpretation presented, there are a lot of news sources reporting the same thing, enough for this to be considered a legitimate story. Regarding the timing a quote from astronomer Andrew Jacob: What's more the spiralling effect witnessed is typical of similar rocket sightings, the rocket would have been in the right place on the same morning and matches the type of phenomenon observed. Who are the hundreds of people who have proven this wrong ? No, a lot of the news sources are directly copying each othe... [More]

Remember in order to put forward the suggestion that the reported explanation is incorrect its first necessary to demonstrate logically that this is the case and to back up that claim, simply stating that it is wrong does not make it so. The rocket lifted off an hour BEFORE the reported sightings took place. Correct, and it took approximately 45 minutes to an hour for its path to take it over Australia. A rocket takes 5-10 mins to leave our atmosphere and enter space and in te process exhausting it's primary lift-off fuel. Please explain that. The rocket did indeed leave the atmosphere within ... The rocket lifted off an hour BEFORE the reported sightings took place. A rocket takes 5-10 mins to leave our atmosphere and enter space and in the process exhausting it's primary lift-off fuel. Please explain that. And it wasn't hundreds of people, my mistake. It was thousands who all reported seeing this a full hour afterwards. That 5 - 10 minutes is about the time it takes to get into orbit, but once in orbit, it takes roughly 90 to 120 minutes (depending on the height of the orbit) to complete one full orbit of the Earth. Given that it takes time to get to orbital speed and then another 45 ... [More]

Maybe there are more of these types of sightings simply because there are more launches conducted by private industry now.

I'd like to see pictures of the spiral, but it seems like not one aussie owns a camera. They report sightings but never take pictures.... Yeah we never take pictures - It's part of our national persona

some of the people interviewed for local TV news bits describe the thing as darting all over the sky. others scoffed at the notion that is was a rocket.
