Black hole blows huge gas bubble

A black hole has been observed blowing a massive bubble of hot gas 1000 light-years across.
The gas is expanding because it is being heated by powerful particle "jets" being released by the black hole. The observations were made by the Very Large Telescope in Chile and Nasa's Chandra space observatory.

Nothing can escape, not even light. Another "we know what they are" moment put to the test and what do you know? Is it possible that everything they think they know about black holes is wrong? Including if they exist or not? In school I did a report on black holes. There were several theories as to what they were and how they came to be, all different and all presented as fact in the books I checked out of the library. That was in 1982, the begining of me believing scientists are wrong more often than we believe. Can anyone say global warming?

Cosmic farts... I love it!!! But to be serious if nothing escapes from a black hole then why is gas being released. Isn't gas something???. In my way of thinking the present scientific thinking is flawed.

It must mean that we really dont know all there is to know about Gravity, and Black Holes. We need more information on the Farting Black hole indeed!

"The observations were made by the Very Large Telescope in Chile" That is a fantastic name for a telescope. Bravo Chile

I have a question about black holes. How can a black hole blast out jets of gas from both sides? I understand it belching gas up out of the point where everything is sucked in, i.e. the event horizon. But how can gas be belched out that extreme dense singularity that is the very bottom of the black hole? Wouldn't that suggest that it's less a black hole, and more a black tube? I always that when it comes to black holes, there's no escaping if you get too close, and there's no coming back once you're sucked in, and that at the bottom of the black hole is an extreme amount of density and mass in... The way I think of it, is that if the black hole is spinning, and has an accretion disk, that the disk will rotate faster closer to the event horizon. Material further out will rotate slower. Similar to the surface of the Sun, magnetic field lines will arise, acting as raceways for accelerated protons and electrons. Only, the field lines in the accretion disk will tend to stretch, perhaps from the rotation, until they extend over the axial poles of the accretion disk. When friction and shocks release x-rays in the accretion material in the inner disk, approaching the event horizon, the disk lo... [More]

That's a good answer, I guess perhaps my problem is that I'm viewing a black hole on a 2D perspective. Perhaps a black hole is like a spinning circular saw where energy is sucked in at both sides, and therefore can be belched out on both sides? Energy can approach from the right or left, or say top or bottom, and the singularity is the mid point? I'm not a black hole genius obviously, this may be common knowledge. Something I was successful at over looking before I made the comment.

I'm so used to seeing depictions of black holes forming from a top down perspective, where a funnel is formed. I think that is where my idea of not understanding jets at both sides came from. Now my idea of a black hole is sort of like an hour glass, with the singularity that skinny neck in the middle. Again, feel free to enlighten me if I'm viewing it the wrong way.
