Scientists in Scotland have developed a material that could be used to make invisibility cloaks.
Known as "Metaflex" the material works by bending and manipulating light around objects, its also the first time that a metamaterial has been produced in a form suitable for fabrics.
A new material that could be used to create a real-life Harry Potter-style "invisibility cloak" has been designed by Scottish scientists.

a very cool invention that will have a myriad of useful applications. i would rather they don't make fabric from it though. with exception of the military, who the hell needs to be invisible?? (i didn't say wants to be, i said needs to be)and if you have the ability to be invisible, guess what...so will the enemy.

Gah, they're really playing with fire here. Imagine if robbers, rapists, killers were invisible. Mass chaos.

Hasn't this discovery been played with around here before? Just seems as though I've read it a few times.....

Hasn't this discovery been played with around here before? Just seems as though I've read it a few times..... Yes. This is the real story: Condensed matter physics is an incredibly competitive field. In condensed matter physics there are many many scientists trying to develop materials with tunable indices of refraction. These materials could be used in a wide variety of applications (electronics, photonics, spintronics, optics, photovoltaics, light emitters, etc.) These scientists want funding. In order to get more funding, these scientists give press releases every time they figure out anoth... [More]
