Electrical magic wand puts out fires

Scientists search for a new way to extinguish fires quickly and efficiently with electricity.
Although it seems like an unlikely solution the idea of using electricity to extinguish fires has been around for more than two centuries. "Our research has shown that by applying large electric fields we can suppress flames very rapidly," says Ludovico Cademartiri whose team has been working on the project.
Last week, team leader Ludovico Cademartiri showed the 241st National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society how electricity could bend, twist, turn and flicker flame. And yes, it can even snuff it out. Dr Cademartiri proved it for the society by shooting a beam of electricity from a "wand" at 30cm-high flames.

I hate to say it but I would clearly use this to zap the living crap out of people, forget the fires. On a serious note, this is a cool and amazing use of science.

You can bet the military is already looking into this. Imagine a full powered "lightening gun" similar to ones depicted in video games being used for real in warfare. Backpack versions for the soldier to use against personnel and more powerful versions mounted on vehicles to deal with tanks, planes, etc. Remember this post when this is seen in use years from now.

It's already been done! Well, kinda! Star Trek-Next Generation; season 2 episode 18, "Up the Long Ladder" originally aired 22 May 1989. The Enterprise's fire suppression system is just that- "beams of electicity that quash fires".
