Pigs could grow human organs

In a new stem cell breakthrough, pigs could be used to grow human organs for use in transplants.
The idea behind "chimeric animals" is not limited to pigs either, rat stem cells have been injected in to mouse embryos producing mice with rat organs. The research could spell an end to the long waiting lists patients have to endure when in need of a transplant.
Scientists have found they can create chimeric animals that have organs belonging to another species by injecting stem cells into the embryo of another species. The researchers injected stem cells from rats into the embryos of mice that had been genetically altered so they could not produce their own organs, creating mice that had rat organs.

Im on a transplant waiting list. I am not sure I would want animals raised simply to replace my organs so I might live a longer life. I love all animals and to misuse them in such a way is criminal. What then will we be haveing more children just so they can be replacements for our current children or family members? Either way it is wrong and unethical. Those animals are living beings, we have no right to play God in their lives...but I guess money is more alluring. I stand up and applaud your stance, it makes it even more profound considering your needs. I will pray for your much needed tran... [More]

Hypocrite? Huh. Funny how we should be caring about pigs and not give two shi*s about the thousands of people who are dying due to faulty organs. Whilst I certainly don't know you, it takes a lot of gall to call someone a hypocrite without knowing their circumstances. I take this opportunity to reserve my judgement on your person. Life is not about absolutes, there is no white, and there is no black, just constant, unforgiving, and unjust shades of grey. Would you look on the face of a dying child and tell them they can't have the operation because its 'unethical'. I ask you this: whose ethics... [More]

vox would you donate your organs? did you sign your donor card yet? I am a patient waiting for a transplant but I would rather a cadaver or a living donor than animals bred for such reasons. Unfortunately post transplant patients have the same risks and complications after the transplant as any donor. I have four adult children yet I could not accept their offer of a live donor knowing what such surgery and risk it poses. Also there are a lot more factors involved in getting a donor organ even if one is available it has to be the correct size, correct aligned valves and same blood type, but th... [More]

{/quote}I completely agree if YOU, chose not to receive animal transplants, that is your prerogative. There is no guarantee that animal transplants will work. Different species and different immune systems and bacteria. You are speculating and assuming such things will work. Would you automatically agree to harvesting your organs should you pass away and no choice in the matter? Would you donate your family members' organs without blinking an eye? They would not need it once they are dead, yet there are thousand of people on waiting lists for organs. If the shoe were on the other foot how woul... [More]

This is wrong on so many levels. Animals are not our slaves to trwat as we like and they have as much right to life as any human. It weill cause unimaginable suffering for these highly intelligent creatures. erowin: to be against one from of cruelty while in favour of another makes you a hypocrite. Get your principals right. How am I a hypocrite? I don't support cosmetic animal testing because animals are more important than makeup. But human life? Animal testing has saved thousands of lives. If it was banned, would you want to be the one to go to the hospital and tell all the people (includin... [More]
