Scientists have indicated that woolly mammoths could walk the Earth again by as early as 2016.
The announcement comes after well-preserved bone marrow was extracted from a thigh bone discovered in the Siberian permafrost. Russian scientist Semyon Grigoriev and Japan's Kinki University are launching a joint project next year to recreate the giant extinct mammal by combining the egg cells of an elephant with nuclei extracted from the mammoth's bone marrow.
Russian scientist Semyon Grigoriev, acting director of the Sakha Republic's mammoth museum, and colleagues are now analyzing the marrow, which they extracted from the mammoth's femur, found in Siberian permafrost soil.
