Giant crustacean discovered in New Zealand

A number of gigantic amphipods measuring 10 times the regular size have been fished up from the depths.
"It's a bit like finding a foot-long cockroach," said Alan Jamieson of Oceanlab. "This amphipod was far bigger than I ever thought possible." The strange creatures were caught in a deep sea metal trap with a camera which filmed some even larger ones nearby. "For such a large and conspicuous animal to go unnoticed for so long is just testament to how little we know about life in New Zealand's most deep and unique habitat," added Dr Ashley Rowden.
A huge crustacean has been found lurking 7km down in the waters off the coast of New Zealand. The creature - called a supergiant - is a type of amphipod, which are normally around 2-3cm long.

@ sevenof seven... "rape and pillage"? seriously? I'll admit that my first thought upon seeing the photo of the creature was to saute in butter and garlic, then finish off with a sprinkling of lemon juice. The idea of raping one of the little buggers never occurred to me. How would one go about doing it?

Very carefully, I'll assume. First you meet it in a bar to sweet talk it, then when it goes to the bathroom slip some GHB in it's drink. It shouldn't give you problems.

Wow, them's big sea lice! Back when I worked in a marine lab, one of my more interesting tasks was to set up a large aquarium into which we placed a recently deceased rock lobster and about 1000 or so of the more normally sized local sea lice (about 1.5-2cm). Then I set up a video camera and recorded some of what transpired, as they cleaned the thing out over the next day or so... For commercial reasons I can't tell you exactly what we were investigating but let's just say that these smaller sea lice are now an integral part of an unusual aquaculture process - one that doesn't result in them b...
