Brazilian ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is just one of those who have sought his services.
Joao de Deus claims to be both a medium and a psychic surgeon, operating using only his hands and communicates with spirits in his efforts to treat otherwise incurable ailments. Despite doubts about his abilities there can be no denying the number of people he has seen who claim to have been cured thanks to his gifts. "Since the age of eight, God has given me this energy," he says. "I don't heal. God heals." Over 1000 people flock to see Joao several days a week, many of which having travelled from other countries to get there.
But does "John of God" really have the power to heal the sick or could it be that the true power he wields is that to make others believe they have been healed ?
Every week using mainly his hands but also armed with scissors, a knife and scalpel, Joao Teixeira de Faria, a self-styled Brazilian medium and "psychic surgeon", treats thousands of sick people who claim to be cured.
