Over 100 terracotta warriors have been unearthed near the Qin Emperor's mausoleum in northern China.
Archaeologists have been painstakingly excavating the figures which were created centuries ago to guard the tomb of China's first emperor. 12 pottery horses along with the remains of chariots, weapons and tools were also found at the site.

"The excavation on the 200sq m site has found a total of 110 terracotta figurines," said Shen Maosheng. "The most significant discovery this time around is that the relics that were found were well-preserved and colourfully painted."
China archaeologists have unearthed 110 new terracotta warriors that laid buried for centuries, an official says.

What I can't figure out is whether those clay warriors were buried standing up or laying down. Or, we're they in a chamber? Article and pics don't address either.

What I can't figure out is whether those clay warriors were buried standing up or laying down. Or, we're they in a chamber? Article and pics don't address either. I'm not sure about this newest batch... but the 8000 life size (6') warriors discovered years earlier were found standing in three chambers with brick floors. http://www.china-travel-golden-route.com/terra_cotta_warriors.html What i have always wondered is.. if real warriors ,individually depicted, were sacrificed to guard the emperor in his new eternal home.

I have also often wondered that as well, seems very likely the amount of time and belief of need for such a project. They were probably treated as dieties while having their likenesses carved, or perhaps this emperor commanded men happy to journey with him from this world, I wonder if they'll ever allow the emperor's tomb unsealed more-so, of course don't mind a little mystery.

Joenhaggrity~ I've also had some of those same thoughts. I wonder if their beliefs were similar to the Samurai in some way. It may have been an honor to sacrifice themselves for the Emperor.
