Photographs of strange glowing blue objects on a Japanese shoreline have been circulating the Internet.
The mysterious objects washed up on a beach in Toyama, Japan and are in fact a type of marine creature called firefly squids which give off a blue glow through bioluminescence.
In its natural environment the light-producing capabilities help it to evade predators below by allowing it to blend in with the light coming from the surface.
These are firefly squids who spend their days in the deep Pacific Ocean only to go hunting near the ocean’s surface when the sun goes down.
