The US government has responded to a tongue-in-cheek petition asking them to build a Death Star.
The petition was started on November 14th and received 34,400 signatures in favour of having the US devote trillions of dollars to the construction of a Star Wars inspired space station capable of destroying planets. The humorous request ended up receiving a formal response because it met the minimum 25,000 signature requirement.
"The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000," said White House science and space chief Paul Shawcross. "We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it." In a concluding statement and in further reference to Star Wars he added - "Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship ?"[!gad]The petition was started on November 14th and received 34,400 signatures in favour of having the US devote trillions of dollars to the construction of a Star Wars inspired space station capable of destroying planets. The US government has rejected a petition urging it to build a "Death Star", claiming it was too expensive, conceptually flawed and did not fit in with the policy of not blowing up planets.
