Ghosts of the past haunt tsunami survivors

Image Credit: Mark Sebastian Ever since the disaster in March 2011 which claimed more than 19,000 lives, tales have surfaced of ghostly figures and specters lined up where shops once stood. Some people have turned to exorcists to help deal with these visions, but psychologists have expressed concern that the sightings, far from being evidence of visitors from the grave, are actually a mental projection of the fear and distress the experiencer associates with the disaster.

"The places where people say they see ghosts are largely those areas completely swept away by the tsunami," said psychiatrist Keizo Hara. "We think phenomena like ghost sightings are perhaps a mental projection of the terror and worries associated with those places."
