A man in France who inherited a house was amazed to discover gold coins and ingots hidden all through it.
The man, who had acquired the mansion in Evreux, Normandy, from a deceased relative, was totally oblivious to the secretive fortune until he moved in and started moving things around.

His suspicions were first aroused when he discovered a box containing a pile of gold coins screwed on to the underside of a piece of furniture.

Another pile of coins was carefully concealed inside an old box used for storing whisky bottles.
After spending a lot more time searching the house he eventually uncovered a vast treasure trove of gold coins and ingots which were later valued at a staggering $3.7 million.

"It was under the furniture, under piles of linen, in the bathroom ... everywhere," he said.

According to auctioneer Nicolas Fierfort, there were a total of 5,000 gold pieces and 39 gold ingots which had all been legally purchased at various times throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

While the new owner is set to become very rich as a result of the discovery, the tax man is likely to do very well out of it too thanks to France's 45% inheritence tax plus up to 3 years of back taxes.

Why would anybody make a find like that public? I mean really! 15 minutes of news notoriety is going to eat away at about 60-70 percent of the find.

Since France's inheritance tax rate is so high, they won't need any foreign aide, right?

Yeah, too bad they didn't keep their trap shut about it. Then again, it's probably difficult to keep that much money a secret. Unless you're the only one present when it's found.

Yep, they should have kept it to themselves.

Off-topic a bit, but yeah... In the US the IRS can go after you for unpaid taxes for 7 years, but, you are only allowed to claim unpaid refunds for 3 years.

The American Southwest are full of  "Lost Treasure" myths. People to this day still try to find them. This was an interesting one: http://www.desertusa.com/mb3/viewtopic.php?t=1905

When did France last receive aid from the USA?

That's why if I found that kind of money, I would -never- tell the press. I don't get the appeal of letting the media know when you suddenly come into a windfall of money.

Would've kept my mouth shut and sold it off piece by piece. I live in an old house that has had several former owners. Now I'm off to check out the attic!
