Authorities baffled by fleet of mystery drones

Who is flying these drones and why ? Image Credit: Dkroetsch
A fleet of drones has been making regular appearances over the last week and even the US military is mystified.
According to reports, as many as seventeen unidentified drones have been regularly showing up over Colorado's Phillips and Yuma counties between 7pm and 10pm in the evening.

The unmanned aerial vehicles will typically form a grid pattern however some of them have also been spotted hovering eerily over houses and empty fields for hours on end.

As things stand, nobody has a clue who is operating the drones or what they are doing.

Authorities don't seem to know who is behind them either with the DEA, FAA, US Air Force and US Army Forces Command admitting to being just as clueless as local authorities on the matter.
"They've been doing a grid search, a grid pattern," said Phillips County Sheriff Thomas Elliot. "They fly one square and then they fly another square. They do not seem to be malicious."

"They don't seem to be doing anything that would indicate criminal activity."

Criminal or not however, the mystery drones have been unnerving many who live nearby.

Investigations into the enigma remain ongoing.

Update: FAA launches investigation into mystery drones.

"Speculation persists about drones said to be as big as cars, flying in groups in grid patterns at night. "“Even if the military has plausible deniability with this, defense contractors might be involved,” Dan Carlson, a drone-spotting retired meteorologist in western Nebraska, said Tuesday. “By the time they ‘fess up to it, they’ll have been in sky for four years.” "Four times this year, Carlson said, drones have flown after dark near his farm outside Sidney, Nebraska. "Drones flew in pairs on two nights, he said. Their speed, impressive range — over the distant horizon without ... [More]

The mysterious drone sightings that captured national attention were a classic case of mass hysteria. At Vice: https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/884xv3/the-colorado-mystery-drones-werent-real

I also had heard that the drones were not real. Videos posted online appeared to be in part airplanes. If this does turn out to be mistaken identification then this will be a good case to consider since it shows a large number of mistaken identifications. That is not abnormal. When people are primed with the suggestion that there are drones flying around then people see drones. Priming leads to a quick decision in the brain to label an event a particular way. It's just how people function.

UFO's are linked to cattle mutilations so perhaps the military are making a big effort with drones to find out what the heck's going on?- https://www.denverpost.com/2009/12/08/colorado-cow-mutilations-baffle-ranchers-cops-ufo-believer/

Crikey, at least the article you linked to makes some attempt to define what is meant by surgical precision as it is often labeled.  The article mentions larger predators such as coyotes or mountain lion. It mentions people. It mentions UFOs. What it noticeably does not mention is insect activity. It also does not mention birds. There is a noticeable mistake in the article: Simply untrue. Carcasses have been left in the open and observed and seen to create the same sort of results as reported in these cases. All of it due to insect and other animal activity. A guy named Rommel looked into thi... [More]

When groups of sinister drones began hovering over homes in America’s Midwest, the FBI, US Air Force and 16 police forces set up a task force. But the drones vanished. Well not exactly ALL, Eldorado. From your link: In a January statement issued by the Colorado Department of Public Safety, the agency confirmed that 14 drones of the hundreds that were allegedly seen by the public “were visually confirmed to be hobbyist drones by law enforcement,”
