The amendment could help to establish a new UFO reporting system with 'immediate' information sharing.
The vote, which took place in the House on Wednesday, saw the successful adoption of a bipartisan amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act which could eventually lead to the creation of a secure database of UFO sightings accessible by scientists, analysts and government personnel.
Efforts have been underway in recent months to make the process of reporting and accessing data on UFO sightings easier and more transparent - especially for pilots and military personnel who have historically struggled to report such encounters for fear of ridicule.
The proposed new UFO reporting system would aim to enable "immediate sharing" of such data.
There was one caveat, however, in that data pertaining to restricted military or government projects would most likely remain classified and would not be made available for access.
As things stand, the amendment seems to have passed with little opposition, however whether or not the proposed system will actually be put into practice remains to be seen.
