In 1978, a mass UFO sighting and mysterious fire spooked the residents of Black Tickle on the Canadian east coast.
The peculiar series of events began on the evening of November 13th when nurse Melita Dyson - who was 18 at the time - saw something she could not explain in the sky.

"The beginning part was flat," she told CBC News. "Honest to goodness, it was like a saucer."

Before long, several members of the local community were watching the object.

Some witnesses recalled seeing a red and orange glow, while Dyson herself described seeing a second, larger saucer-shaped object emerge from the heavens and link up to the first.

All in all, the spectacle lasted for a good 40 minutes before the objects disappeared.

The event left a lasting impression on those who were present at the time.
Interestingly, the strangeness didn't end there, either, as a short time later reports came in of a fire that had inexplicably started at the nearby Martin's Pond where the town got its water supply.

"It was surreal," said Richard Neville who was 9 at the time of the incident. "Something fell out of the sky and we could see that it made its mark, you know, and it was very real."

What made the fire particularly odd was the fact that the area was covered in frost and snow.

According to RCMP documents later obtained through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), officers had attended the scene that day and efforts had been made to find out what people saw in the sky.

In the end, it was concluded that no plane or crashed satellite could have been responsible.

No debris was ever found in the vicinity of the fire, either.

To this day, no conclusive explanation for these events has ever been found.

According to the police officers present the "object" sat on the surface of the water. Didn't know meteorites floated. I guess they can hover too. Learn something everyday. Thanks.

You actually have to read the article before you can summarize.

Yes, that's what they thought they saw. Everything else fits a meteor.

Did I miss the part where the flying saucer left physical evidence like the campfire did?

By all means point out the important details that I missed after reading the article three times and comparing with a similar article. Two people claimed they saw incredible amazing things in the sky that left no trace and no one else saw. One was a teenager and the other was only a child nine years old, not exactly high on the scale of reliable witnesses.

Of course this object that sat on the water miraculously disappeared without a trace. Also witnesses disagreed on what they saw. Only one police officer (Constable Pound) said he saw something on the water. Oddly Constable O'Brien and Police Corporal Victor Werbieki did mention seeing this.
