The release date of legendary director Steven Spielberg's upcoming UFO-themed movie has been announced.
A couple of months ago, we reported on rumors that Spielberg was working on a new movie centered on the UFO phenomenon - a return to form for the director who became a household name thanks to movies such as
Close Encounters of the Third Kind and
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Exactly what the storyline of the new movie will be remains unclear, but there are some who have speculated that it could be a resurrection of a cancelled Spielberg project from back in the 1970s.
At the time, Columbia Pictures had requested that he create a sequel to
Close Encounters of the Third Kind and what he came up with was a movie tentatively titled
Night Skies.
This long-lost creation, which was to be a horror movie, had been inspired by the real-life Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter which saw a family from Kentucky reportedly terrorized by alien entities.
The film's story centered on a group of alien scientists who would have attempted to communicate with various animals before turning hostile and even dissecting the hapless family's livestock.
There were even plans to film the movie's opening sequence from one of the space shuttles.
Spielberg would ultimately decide to cancel the film in 1981 so that he could work on
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial instead (which went on to be a major blockbuster hit).
So could the legendary director's new UFO movie be a resurrection of the
Night Skies concept ?
With the film releasing on May 15th, 2026 - we won't have too long to wait to find out.
