This strange statue bears more than a passing resemblance to modern depictions of extraterrestrial entities.
Discovered during excavation work at an archaeological site in Kuwait known as Bahra 1, the figurine is connected to the ancient Ubaid culture which spread from Mesopotamia to the Arabian peninsula.
Thought to date back some 7,000 years, the figurine looks a lot like some sort of alien entity with its anomalously elongated head, slanted eyes, thin mouth and flat nose.
That said, its style and characteristics are typical of other figurines created by the Ubaid culture and it is very unlikely to have anything to do with extraterrestrial visitors from other worlds.
"Its presence raises intriguing questions about its purpose and the symbolic, or possibly ritualistic, value it held for the people of this ancient community," said archaeologist Piotr Bielinski.
In addition to the significance of the figurine itself, the discovery has also yielded environmental information derived from the type of pottery that it was made from.
Organic traces such as plant fragments, for example, show what type of flora was commonplace in the region at the time.
"Early analyses have revealed traces of wild plants, particularly reed, within the locally produced pottery, while cultivated plant remains including cereals like barley and wheat have been found in the imported Ubaid ware," said archaeologist Roman Hovsepyan.
