Alien life: 'it's human conceit to think that we are alone', scientist claims

How likely is it that we are alone in the universe ? Image Credit: CC BY 3.0 Stewart Duff, CSIRO
A leading British space scientist maintains that it is a practical inevitability that we are not alone in the universe.
Throughout human history, there has always been an overwhelming tendency for us to believe that the Earth is a special and unique place that is situated at the center of the universe.

Over the centuries, however, astronomical observations and advances in scientific understanding have made it increasingly clear to us that our planet is in fact not the center of our solar system and that neither our solar system or even our galaxy are special and do not lie at the center of the cosmos.

Today, we are left with one last claim to uniqueness in that our planet is home to the only known example of life anywhere in the universe.

According to British space scientist Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock, however, it is little more than human conceit to suggest that our species is alone in the vastness of space.
"The fact we only know what approximately 6% of the universe is made of at this stage is a bit embarrassing," she said.

"It's that sense of wonder and exploration, and the sense that there's so much more to discover."

In truth, she is most likely correct - the odds that we are the only life forms in a universe comprised of many billions of stars and planets are infinitesimally small.

Whether or not we will ever come into contact with alien life ourselves, however, is another matter entirely.

I don’t think there’s anyone who posts here that doesn’t believe in or isn’t fascinated by the possibilities of extraterrestrial life existing in the universe.

Just to add to that... Very few people here (if any) claim that we are NOT being visited, that it is impossible.  What is questioned is the evidence and the claim that they ARE here.

We are not alone! Have we forgotten that many people see UFOs?

At least half (if not all) of those are obvious fakes. Maybe you can pick one of them that you like the most and lets take a closer look at it? Also.. People seeing something that they fail to identify isnt evidence of anything.

How does someone seeimg something the can't identify, demonstrate we are not alone?

'Conceit' is not the appropriate word. We need evidence or we have to assume 'we don't know'. I'm a believer in aliens and that aliens have also been involved in earth activities, but it seems some faint signal from a mind-boggling distance away is what more fits these scientist's mindset.

Well, the ones that you believe are here had to come from somewhere, right? At least the scientisit know what kind evidence they are looking for and how to verify it... peer review and all that.

No, problem with looking. Great if they get something. No response does not mean no advanced aliens but perhaps a decision not to use direct contact like that.

We are using the technology that we have and that means watching and listening. Sending out interstellar radio messages (and the voyagers golden records) given the vast distances, is more of a bottle into the cosmic ocean type of deal and says more about us than anything else... and is not always as serious as it might sound. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_interstellar_radio_messages   Of course one can have opinions on whether "shouting in the jungle" is a good idea or not? The late physics professor Stephen Hawking expressed concern multiple times about humans calling out into the v... [More]
