Incredible new map shows what Antarctica would look like without ice

Antarctica is essentially an entire lost continent with a potential treasure trove of archaeology hidden underneath.
Many works of fiction over the years have detailed the possibility of finding a 'lost world' that has remained untouched since prehistoric times and incredibly, one such place actually does exist - Antarctica - an entire continent that has remained buried in ice for millions of years.

Now, the British Antarctic Survey has released a highly detailed map showing exactly what Antarctica would look like if the ice wasn't there.

Incorporating data captured over six decades of research, the map shows this remote continent as having a highly varied landscape complete with mountains, river basins, lakes and plains.

It's difficult to imagine now, but the dinosaurs once roamed this long-lost land which at the time would have been covered in primordial forests and swamps.
No doubt fossil evidence of its ancient residents is still waiting to be found beneath the ice.

Scientists are now hoping to use the new map to help them model how climate change will impact the ice over the coming years.

"This is the fundamental information that underpins the computer models we use to investigate how the ice will flow across the continent as temperatures rise," said glaciologist Dr Hamish Pritchard.

"Imagine pouring syrup over a rock cake - all the lumps, all the bumps, will determine where the syrup goes and how fast."

"And so it is with Antarctica: some ridges will hold up the flowing ice; the hollows and smooth bits are where that ice could accelerate."

Pretty neat really. As I understand, that at one point -due to plate tectonics- the Antarctic was lush and green expanse hence the jungle-like environment. Perhaps one day far into the future a similar condition will return.

Can anyone explain the straight rows of holes, are they naturally occurring, man made, or artifacts resultant of the IMG processing? The rectangular area cutting though the largest patch of them doesn't look natural either.   Nice bits of face pareidolia on the left side.

Those holes are imaging artifacts. The data for making the map you see came from different sources and sophistication of imaging technologies and other methods (like core sampling)... but this is my general understanding and may not be accurate. I have seen those exact type "holes" in other datasets, though, if that helps.

It’s basically two landmasses. To the right is Greater Antarctica which has a much deeper ice sheet. To the left is Lesser Antarctica, with its shallower ice sheet and tail pointed north towards the bottom of South America, which is much smaller and basically an archipelago of islands with mile thick ice separating them. Interestingly, an ice free Lesser Antarctica would have a waterway cutting across it because the Ross, Weddell, and Bellinghausen seas would be connected to each other. There is no “archaeological treasure trove” to be found there, that’s the realm of fringe fantasy wh... [More]

And it's the dry land we Dutch are going to move to in the not so distant future. The people of Bangladesh and those living on islands in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean will move along. The main challenge for us will be to live in semi-darkness for about half a year. We'll survive.
