Sightings of the enigmatic mokele-mbembe are reportedly on the rise

An increasing number of people claim to have witnessed a dinosaur-like creature in the forests of the Congo Basin.
Said to resemble the size and shape of a giant sauropod dinosaur, the legendary creature known locally as mokele-mbembe has been sighted in the Congo Basin for decades.

One of the earliest accounts of the creature came courtesy of German Captain Ludwig Freiherr von Stein zu Lausnitz who had heard stories of the mokele-mbembe from local villagers during a 1913 survey of German colonies in what is now modern day Cameroon.

While descriptions varied, the creature was said to be an enormous reptile around the size of an elephant with a long, flexible neck, a horn on its head and a long alligator-like tail.

It was also said to live in caves and although it was known to kill people, it was entirely vegetarian.

While the legend of the mokele-mbembe had faded into obscurity over the decades, in more recent years it seems as though the creature has been sighted a lot more frequently.
But what is behind this sudden resurgence and could the creature actually be real ?

Some believe that this otherwise inexplicable increase in sightings is most likely down to increasing amounts of deforestation in the Congo Basin.

Animals of all sorts are being displaced and inevitably this means that they are encountering human settlements a lot more often - perhaps some of these encounters have been misinterpreted as sightings of the creature.

Then again, perhaps there really is a large, unknown creature lurking in the forests.

Without definitive physical evidence, however, we will likely never know for sure.

Has anyone seen the movie: Baby? I was obsessed as a kid about dinosaurs. I know it is impossible but I would love so much for one to still exist today.

Well we know bigfoot exists and the Black Panther, why not this?

impressive reports, however, no one ever seems to have so much as a photo of the footprints of the Mokele M'Bembe, let alone plaster castings of them. strange, that.

When I first heard about the Mokele-Mbembe in 1980 (at age 12), I thought it was a bizarre story -- and I still do. It was on a radio news segment. They said it made a fearsome sound that even frightened gorillas. Considering the year, the report was probably about the first Roy Mackal expedition to find MM (his second was in 1981). I am still very skeptical about it being a dinosaur, but it could be an undiscovered animal species.

Arthur Clark's show is also where I first learned about the giant snake photo. The Congo is an interesting place for cryptids. Dinosaurs, giant snakes, and 5 foot long spiders called the Jba-Fofi.

It is an interesting idea for sure. But as others have already brought up, there is zero corroborating evidence to support that such a creature exists. As with other cryptids the viable breeding population question comes into play as well.

Roy Mackal’s books  along with those of Bernard Heuvelmans and Ivan Sanderson were always great reads for all things cryptid when I was a kid. They’re still interesting today. What makes them stand out from the crowd is how sober and serious they treated the subjects they wrote about, especially Heuvelmans.
