Ominous black tower structure spotted at Area 51 on Google Earth

What is this thing ? Image Credit: Google Maps The base, which has for years been associated with stories of captured UFOs and reverse-engineered alien technology, is now home to yet another mystery - one that comes courtesy of Google Maps.

By zooming in on the north-western side of the base, it is possible to find a tall, peculiar-looking tower that is dark in color and shaped like a triangular prism.

You can find it yourself on Google Earth by entering the co-ordinates 37°14'46.5"N 115°49'24.0"W.

Speculation has been rife over exactly what this tower's purpose could be.

Some have suggested that it might be a control tower related to the nearby airstrips, while others have put forward the idea that it is some sort of science experiment or weather station.Others, again, believe that it is related to reverse-engineered alien technology.

Ultimately, we may never know for sure - Area 51 is a secure and tightly controlled facility and it us unlikely that the US Air Force is going to be particularly forthcoming about anything that's there.

Nonetheless, it makes for some interesting speculation.

The mystery is similar to that of the 'door' spotted on Google Maps in Antarctica.
