Can AI talk to animals ? Image Credit: claudia14 / Pixabay
Google is developing a new AI model in an attempt to understand and replicate dolphin whistles and clicks.
The ability to have a conversation with a dolphin might seem like something out of a comic book, but thanks to the advent of artificial intelligence, it might not be long before we can do this for real.
Google, in collaboration with the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP), is currently working on a new AI model called DolphinGemma that could one day make it possible to translate dolphin sounds.
The search giant has been training the AI using sounds from the Wild Dolphin Project's acoustic archive.
We still don't actually know if dolphin sounds form words or sentences as we know them, so translating their vocalizations is certainly not going to be easy.
If it is at all possible, however, then the new AI could eventually make it possible to translate what dolphins are saying and respond to them in their own language.
Google has ensured that the model can run on relatively low-spec hardware, meaning that it can be loaded onto mobile devices for use in the field.
