A spate of AI-generated photograph submissions has prompted Loch Ness tourism bosses to seek assistance.
Determining whether or not an alleged photograph of the Loch Ness Monster is real or fake can be a challenging task at the best of times, but thanks to the recent advent of artificial intelligence, it has become possible for anyone to generate fake pictures of the elusive creature in mere seconds.
Now in a renewed effort to weed out such images, tourism bosses at the Loch Ness Center in Drumnadrochit have drafted in experts to analyze photographs sent in by members of the public who claim to have captured evidence of the monster on camera.
In many cases, the image hasn't been deliberately doctored but instead artificially enhanced using AI by tools on modern smartphones - making something appear more significant than it actually is.
"Please don't send us AI pictures," said general manager Nagina Ishaq.
"Those pictures won't be entertained. It's our duty to ensure we keep some integrity, instead of promoting anything that's AI generated to get attention."
"We have not seen anyone coming to us with a picture of an actual monster or a plesiosaur. But sometimes, there is a hump or a surface which is enhanced."
"In some cases AI is used to enhance photos of anomalies on the surface, which is not necessarily the real depiction. But they get filtered through and don't get approval."
"Myself and my team are not experts. That's why we have a team of consultants who do it for us."
